DIY Farm Table: How You Can Create Your Own Reclaimed Barnwood Furniture

Posted by Sandra Ulickij on

A DIY project can uplift your home in new ways. One major reason is that you created a piece just for you. A one of a kind addition that will add extra personality to your space. One great DIY project to take on is building your own reclaimed barnwood furniture. Reclaimed barnwood furniture has a history and built-in personality to elevate your space.

Collect Your Materials

The first step in building your own reclaimed barnwood furniture is collecting your barnwood. Find a local place that has a wide selection of materials from slabs to doors and anything wood. Reclaimed barnwood typically comes from salvaged places like farmhouses. This is the perfect time to decide on the size of your piece and how many pieces of wood will be needed to achieve your desired look.

Begin Assembling Your DIY Barnwood Furniture

Line up all your reclaimed barnwood furniture and trim the edges as necessary. Create the shape and size that is right for you. Don’t forget you can utilize the cut off trimmings for other projects! Once your tables is trimmed and shaped, properly sand the edges and secure the table with clamps overnight. If you need to add extra support, add extra wood to the bottom of your table near the edges.

Build Your Table Legs

Industrial materials are a great compliment when it comes to reclaimed barnwood furniture. Utilize a material, like steel pipes, for the legs of your table. Measure and cut them to the ideal length. Don’t make things harder on yourself and look for a material that is ready to use in your project. For example, when using piping, look for pipes that have been threaded rather than manually doing it yourself. Finally, attach your chosen legs to the table.

Seal Your Table

After sanding the table top to the desired texture, seal it with multiple coats of Varathane. If you choose to add a stain this is where you would begin to do so. But keep in mind, the appeal of reclaimed barnwood is to show off its gorgeous history and personality. Adding a stain would cover the browns, greys, and saw marks you expect from reclaimed barnwood.

Now you have your very own, original, reclaimed barnwood table. You know the care and love you have put into this table and will enjoy it for years to come. There are plenty of other DIY projects you can do with reclaimed barnwood.
