Avoid Direct Sunlight

We love sunshine so, naturally, we will consider placing our  handmade solid wood dining table in the optimal place to enjoy both our family and the sun. This actually is not ideal. Over time exposure to sunlight can fade the wood of your table and cause it to become discoloured. The heat from the sun can dry out the wood and cause cracks. During the warm summer months, keep the blinds down or use your curtains to block the sun if your table is close to a window. You can also utilize UV-resistant coatings to slow down the process, but you won’t be able to eliminate it entirely.

Avoid Chemical Polish

When cleaning you may want to reach for your favourite, trusted, polish. If it contains chemicals or is in an aerosol can, stay away from it! The polish will build up the wood’s surface over time and they aren’t kind to tables with a varnish finish. They don’t actually help the wood beneath the sealant or the finish that is on your table. Plus, the particles of the polish actually attract dust to your table.

Wipe with a Cloth

Cleaning your  handmade solid wood dining table is as easy as using a microfiber or soft, lint-free cloth. It will attract the dust and particles rather than just pushing them around. If needed, dampen the cloth slightly to help with the cleaning process, and be sure to follow up with a soft, dry towel to ensure no moisture remains. When wiping be sure to follow the grain of the wood’s surface!

Avoid Direct Contact of Hot and Cold

This may not be something you have considered before but use coasters to create a buffer between hot and cold surfaces and your table. Condensation causes damage and can cloud the surface of the wood not to mention leave unsightly water rings!

Taking Care of Your New Handmade Solid Wood Dining Table

When purchasing your table, ask for cleaning instructions specific to your table. If there are no special recommendations, keep it clear of direct sunlight, avoid hot and cold surfaces, and clean it lightly with a cloth.
